Information regarding off-campus-based computers and the Domain Name System (DNS)
The DNS infrastructure at CSU is changing in order to address DNS service and security issues. Please review information below concerning this change and identify whether your computer is impacted by this change.
Who is impacted: Off-campus-based computers and mobile laptops manually configured to use Rush (129.82.103.78) and Hasty (129.82.103.79) as DNS resolving servers
What to do if your computer is impacted: Identify and reconfigure off-campus-based computers and mobile laptops that currently are configured to use Rush and Hasty for DNS resolution to instead use DHCP for network configuration, facilitating the use of non-CSU-based DNS services prior to October 1st.
When will the changes take place: DNS server registration with Educause/ARIN was changed on August 3rd; off-campus access to DNS services on Rush/Hasty ends October 1st. Therefore, the changes to off-campus-based computers must be completed prior to October 1st.
Note: No reconfiguration is expected to be necessary for mobile computers that generally stay on-campus but sometimes may be used off-campus -- as long as the method by which the mobile computer is connected to an off-campus Internet Service Provider (such as a WiFi hotspot, home wireless system etc.) uses DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) to obtain its IP Address and DNS service IP addresses. However, if the primary connection method for an off-campus-based computer uses manually-set IP address and DNS server information, and that DNS server information is set to Rush or Hasty, then the computer's DNS configuration must either be changed to use the off-campus-based ISP's DNS resolving servers, or the computer should be configured to use DHCP so that it obtains the ISP's DNS resolving servers automatically.
