Social Media based Authentication is a tie-in to the campus Single Sign On system called Shibboleth.

Details:

Social Auth simplifies the authorization to services of users who do not have local (eID) accounts by relying on trusted 3^rd party partners (Facebook, Google, etc.) to do the user-authentication piece and trusting the user identity to be verified by that 3^rd party. No actual user data is sent to the 3^rd party.
